Synopsis

In this powerful and intimate documentary, Edo filmmaker Sunday Dolph Christopher explores Sweden’s unexpected connection to one of Africa’s greatest kingdoms. Standing inside the Ethnographic Museum in Stockholm, face to face with looted Benin artefacts, he traces their violent removal during the 1897 British invasion—and Sweden’s role in preserving them for over a century.

Shot with support from the Ethnographic Museum and National Museums of World Culture, the film reveals the grandeur of the Benin Empire, the trauma of colonial theft, and the growing call for restitution. As Sweden returns 39 artefacts to Nigeria in 2023, Echoes of Benin becomes a timely reflection on history, justice, and shared accountability.
